A stand of common, or black, alder (Alnus glutinosa).  There are many of these around the fields.  They are good for the honey bees in the spring as their catkins provide an early source of pollen.  They are a food source for a wide variety of  insects.  They also have nitrogen-fixing root nodules, even though they are not legumes.
